How To Get Into Sales Reddit
Why do you want to get into sales?
This was the question I was asked during the interview. My response was to bring value to the customer and give a quality product to fill a void or a company need. (This was a B to B company) They corrected me and said the correct response is " to make money". Is this a one off or is that really what sale managers what to hear? Thanks in advance for your responses!!!

I enjoy sales, talking to the customers, solving complex problems with creative solutions and all that stuff.
But at the end of the day, I'm in it for the money. If I could find a way to make $200k a year driving a forklift and listening to music, I'd probably do that for a while.
Also I like setting my own schedule and having a boss that's in another state.

From my experience I wouldn't say it's a one off, infact I'm inclined to agree with the sentiment.

your answer sounds better for customer success

Agreed. And your user name is terrific.

Not all sales managers want the exact same answer but unlike every other job, don't worry about sugarcoating that you're doing the job for $. As long as you sprinkle in the parts about helping the customer, provide solutions, etc.(and mean it!) you should be good.
My answer is something along the lines of sales is the only job where(usually) the main person you negotiate your earnings with is yourself. That's motivating to me.

I was in sales over 20 years, and now I'm in sales management. This is the most correct response, at least for me.

is that really what sale managers what to hear?
Yes. Making friends and helping people are great as long as that doesn't get in the way of making money.
It'd be commission based right?

I was about to say, your answer would put you into customer success. If you want to get into sales and they ask you why, your answer always needs to be "make money." Even though much of it can be a grind, the sky CAN be the limit in sales. Matter of fact, I know people in their 20s making more than their parents.

No one really likes sales all that much. Most do it for the culture, money or high of closing.

I've always used something along the lines of "I want a position where if my results impact my paycheck more proportionately."
Edit: strike through

Great answer, but you've got to put a killer statement in that as well.
"I like being in control of how much money I make year after year. That the work I put in every day, results in a dollar amount."
level 1
You go into sales because you're hungry for money, not saving the planet.
Your statement reads more like a CSR than sales.
level 1
That's a little redundant for them to say, yes obviously we all want to make money lol but at my job we all at least say we have other reasons for doing sales when a client asks
level 1
Your answer seems extremely rehearsed and would make me question your honesty if I were the hiring manager. I always say that I'm in sales for the money, but I want to be in the specific industry for the mushy gushy stuff like impacting lives, Blah Blah.
level 1
Honestly, I would preface it with something like "First off, I'm in sales because in motivated by money and it is my responsibility to provide for me and my family."
I would knock that out of the way real quick just to be real. Then I would move into the fluff aka the reason that you will add value to the company that your interviewing for and their customers.
Constantly be selling them on the value you will bring to the company. Constantly be selling them on the value you will be bringing their customers. Constantly be selling you.
Cheers brotha!

Haha thanks ! I'm a sista! 😉

Any answer that doesn't include that is disingenuous. And they want you to be money motivated. Half your compensation will be based on hitting your quota.
Cute answer though.

I answer this honestly. I say something along the lines of "I can't imagine myself doing anything else because it's my passion". And that's the truth, I've tried other jobs (short term), Sales is the only job that keeps me interested, motivated and excited to work!
level 1
Because I'm committed to earning some serious money and getting rich. I hate being broke
level 1
I ran into this. If you went with the more polished answer then maybe sales really isn't for you.
Regardless of where you go - it's a blue collar job and the successful people are motivated by money & promotions to sales manager +.
Food for thought at the very least
level 2
Sales is not a blue collar job, lol.
