Which Android tablet is for you?

The biggest advantage when buying Android is the sheer choice that you've got in front of you. Whether you want a large laptop replacement tablet or a small, nimble tablet to take around with you during the day, Android offers a wide variety of choice to suit your needs. We round up the best Android tablets for whichever task you've got in mind.

Students

Students like myself are often on tight budgets and in need of something that gets the job done for the lowest price possible. One of the most important uses for a student's tablet is viewing textbooks and for that a high resolution display helps is immensely helpful.

The usual speed and swiftness of any device is needed and extras like a stylus and multi-window support are positives as well. With all of that in mind, you've actually got a few choices.

The first and cheapest choice is the AsusNexus 7 (2013). It's light, fast, cheap and has a great screen. It's also a Nexus device meaning you'll get updates first and it comes with unadulterated stock Android. That's also a downside, as stock Android currently lacks multi-window support and you won't get as many features as other tablets will offer. It's currently being sold for around $200. The second choice the LG G Pad 8.3 has only come into consideration with recent price drops. These price cuts have brought it within touching distance of the Nexus 7 (2013) and it's currently being sold for around $300. It offers a little bit more screen real estate, as well as a much nicer aluminium back construction. It also runs LG's own skin which offers multi-window support as well as a few additional features. The third and final choice is a little more expensive for those with bigger budgets, or better yet, somebody else buying it for them. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition)offers even more screen real estate with a higher resolution and since it's a part of the Note family it comes with the great S-Pen which can be used to jot down notes and draw diagrams. Gaming

While many high-end Android devices will suit your gaming needs well, there are a few tablets that have gaming in mind. The EVGA Tegra Note 7 is one such tablet offering high-end gaming performance at a budget price. Retailing for around $199 it features a quad-core Tegra 4 processor with a 72 core GPU. It also features front facing speakers and an HDMI out port, as well as the usual TegraZone app store for Tegra optimised games. There's also the option to connect it to a bluetooth controller for an even more immersive experience.

Laptop replacement

There's one tablet that comes to mind when thinking of a laptop replacement and it's the Samsung Galaxy NotePro 12.2. With a massive 12.2-inch screen and the usual Samsung additions like multi-window and the S-Pen it pushes laptop replacement to a whole new level. It doesn't skimp on performance either with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor backed by 3GB of RAM it has all of the power necessary to keep up with all of the intensive processes. All rounder

Often times you aren't looking for a tablet that does a specific thing exceedingly well, but rather, everything well. These all rounder tablets must keep up with the daily demands while still having enough juice at the end of the day for a House of Cards marathon before you sleep. They must also be durable enough to pass to the kids, and light and nimble enough to carry around all day. With all of that in mind you've got two exceedingly good choices.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is light, thin and powerful. Oh and did we mention that it's water and dust resistant? It's pretty much the perfect tablet for people in need of a do-everything tablet and waterproofing is great for those who need peace of mind that spilling the morning coffee on it won't do it the least bit of harm. Samsung releases so many tablets that it's hard to ignore them in a tablet round up, and their latest offering is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. There are two variants of the Galaxy Tab S, a 8.4-inch variant and the larger 10.5-inch variant. Both feature beautiful Super AMOLED displays and are light and thin. They also offer the usual Samsung software features — whether you like them or not– like multi-window support. The Tab S 10.5 retails for around $500 and the Tab S 8.4's asking price is $399.
